Planted Roof Systems Mulch
Green Roof Research Opportunity

EcoCover should be an ideal mulch for planted roof systems and we are interested in conducting green roof research with parties looking for a new and innovative opportunity.

EcoCover and new EcoCoverRF are biodegradable mulch mats made predominately from waste paper.  You can read more about EcoCover in the links to your right.

The key beneficial attributes of EcoCover are:

  • Superior water and soil moisture conservation versus plastic

  • EcoCover will absorb water from rainfall or above the mulch sprinklers, yet does not easily allow evaporation from beneath while allowing the soil to breath - plastic is famous for creating septic or anaerobic conditions in soil

  • Better soil temperature moderation (EcoCover has a higher R value than plastic)

  • Improved plant growth

  • Better weed control

  • Works as a container weed barrier for potted plants, shrubs and trees

  • EcoCoverRF™, reinforced with Hessian fiber laminated to our extended life Mulch Mat, has high wind resistance and higher shear strength for use on sloped surfaces

All of these attributes have been proven multiple times in various independently conducted research projects reported in peer reviewed university publications. Research is ongoing and green roofs should be an ideal application for learning.

EcoCover topped by a decorative mulch like bark or other material should work well with closely spaced plantings on planted roof systems that eventually mature to provide their own shade cover to control weeds.

EcoCover has introduced a new product, EcoCoverRF™, which is our longer-lived Mulch Mat laminated to Hessian (think jute or burlap) woven cloth which is designed for high wind areas and / or steeper slopes or roof pitches to improve the structural integrity and shear strength of the mat, which is especially important when it is wet.

EcoCoverRF™ will be undergoing organic certification in New Zealand. Hessian is a natural fiber, so certification should not be an issue, but we still have to jump through the hoop. In the mean time landscapers have been buying this product faster than we can make it - we are presently 3-4 weeks in arrears on orders in New Zealand and we have never even advertised the product. We gave away a few samples to existing customers and the market made itself.

Another product in development, which is part of our patents, is EcoCover used as a seed carrier. We are still perfecting the manufacturing process, but experiments have worked well so far. You prepare your soil bed and then completely mulch the surface area with EcoCover SeedMat - seeds could be grass, or a variety of flowers, annual or perennial ornamentals. You can also plant shrubs or other plants through the mat or use the mat to surround existing similar vegetation. Keep the mat well watered like you would any new plantings or newly laid sod, and you will in a matter of a few weeks have weed free growth as you wish.

EcoCover will also be available with other seeds like vegetables in a row with appropriate spacing so you can roll out a row in your roof top garden, stake it down or furrow in the edges and here come your weed free vegetables pre-mulched.

At the end of its useful life, EcoCover biodegrades into additional soil humus and worm castings:

  • Creating no waste

  • An environmental positive for plant life

  • Providing a reduction in land filled waste paper

  • Providing human employment at living wages

  • Reducing the use of unsustainable products made from petroleum and natural gas.

If you are interested in conducting green roof research using EcoCoverRF, we would be pleased to provide reasonable quantities of material at no charge, FOB Auckland, New Zealand with you paying the freight to your destination in exchange for research results, photographs and other information helpful to evaluate the appropriate use of EcoCover in planted roof systems.

Please contact us for discussions.  Small samples for evaluation are available via air mail.
