Based on your interest
in EcoCover, I though you might be interested to
read some EcoCover news from New Zealand from last
week.
EcoCover’s
Moisture Control and 2006 Weather Patterns
The MetService (New Zealand's equivalent of the
National Weather Service in the USA) have stated
in their latest Seasonal Forecast that “…the
warm Tasman Sea may well help lead us into a
long summer with several new high temperature
records...”, and for the lower and East Coast
they are predicting extended periods of warm dry
weather.
Ken Ring
has predicted in his book, Almanac and Isobaric
Maps 2006 that there is the possibility
that “2006 may turn out to be one of the warmest
years on record”, with “eastern areas from
Marlborough to facing drought and may receive
less than three-quarters of the national average
rainfall.” “For the , the longest period without
any rain could be during the first half of
February” and a prediction of a drought…. “From
January to October, South Canterbury and may get
very little rain.”
Therefore it is
timely that we remind you that EcoCover has been
proven to prevent around 80% water loss due to
evaporation by slowing evaporation in even the
hottest conditions, reducing the need for
watering. EcoCover mulch mat will shade the soil
surface and provide a physical barrier, reducing
weed growth and shield the soil and plant roots
from the effects of solar radiation and
temperature extremes. EcoCover helps to conserve
moisture in the root ball of the new plant until
it establishes roots in the adjacent landscape.
By conserving soil moisture it provides
earthworms with protection from sudden changes
in temperature. It can also provide them with an
additional food source. Consequently earthworm
survival is usually favoured where mulches are
applied.
Competition for
moisture in the soil makes the elimination of
weeds essential in the planting of tree
seedlings for forestry particularly in drought
prone areas where the water conservation
properties of the mulch can substantially reduce
early mortality in seedling. In drought prone
areas of it has been recommended that new
forestry plantings do not take place unless
mulch is used.
EcoCover is a
convenient and easy way to mulch new and
existing plantings, EcoCover squares come in
three sizes, 1m 650mm and 500mm to suit all
applications. It is also available in 20m rolls.
Ron's
note: Changing weather patterns due to
global warming and climate change are truly
global, and the issue of changing rainfall
patterns are of concern to agricultural
interests everywhere, such as record droughts
this year in parts of the Midwest, and in
Portugal, Spain, the Amazon basin of Brazil,
etc. EcoCover's soil moisture conserving
attribute is but one of many reasons EcoCover
will be important to farmers and growers
everywhere.

EcoCity
Endorses EcoCover, Mayors Visit
We are pleased to
announce that after a visit to the factory by
the Mayor of Waitakere City, Mr. Bob Harvey and
the CEO, Mr. Harry O’Rourke, they have given
their full and unqualified endorsement of
EcoCover. This endorsement was given because of
the 33% cost savings in maintenance of a
trial garden using EcoCover in the city and also
for the de-cycling of paper waste.
Mayor Bob and Harry were joined by Auckland City
Councilor Scott Milne and Auckland Regional
Councilor David Hay for the visit.
Ron's
note: The mayor of a sizeable
Tennessee City has expressed an interest in
learning more about how the city and the county
in which the city is located can reduce waste
paper to landfill and showcase a sustainable
manufacturing business in their industrial
park. If you are interested in an EcoCover
plant for your location, get the politicians
informed. EcoCover is a politically savvy idea
and all politicians like savvy ideas, especially
before elections!

section of the prestigious Urbus
LandScapes Magazine. They remind us
that… “EcoCover is a product to suppress weeds,
warm up the soil, and satisfy your environmental
conscience at the same time. The best part?
EcoCover is made from recycled paper, so you are
also helping to reduce global waste.”
